Penalty runs

An umpire signals five penalty runs by bringing one arm across his chest and touching his shoulder. If he taps his shoulder, the penalty runs are awarded to the batting side. If he places his hand there, runs are given to the fielding team.

New ball

To signal a new ball, the umpire raises the ball up in his hand.

Last hour

To signal the last hour of play, the umpire taps his wristwatch.

Dead ball

To signal a dead ball, the umpire crosses his wrists below his knees.

Cancel call

To cancel a call, the umpire touches each shoulder with the opposite hand.

TV replay

A TV replay is signaled by a field umpire making a square mime of a TV screen.

One short

One short is signaled by the umpire touching one shoulder with the hand of the same arm.

Out

An out is signaled when the umpire raises the index finger.

Leg bye

A leg bye is signaled with the umpires hand touching a raised knee.

Bye

A bye is signaled by one arm stretched high above the body.

Wide

A wide is signaled by both arms outstretched.

No ball

A no ball is signalled by an arm raised at shoulder height.

Four

A boundary four is signaled by the umpire waving an arm from side to side, finishing with the arm across the chest.

Six

A six is signaled by the umpire raising both hands above his head.
